How Much Does it Cost to Install a Dishwasher?

So you're in the market for a new dishwasher -- or maybe you've already bought one -- and you're looking for a pro to set it up.

The cost to install a dishwasher typically runs between $137 and $257, for labor and incidental supplies only.

That's assuming you already have the basic setup -- a designated space in your kitchen and the necessary plumbing and electrical connections. If you need these to be added or if you would like to change the position of the appliance, cost to install the dishwasher may increase to upwards of $500.

Cost Breakdown

  • Supplies -- Usually, you will buy your own dishwasher before calling in a qualified handyman to install it. Other supplies that will be needed include: a water hose specifically labeled for use with dishwasher; a water line angle fitting for the dishwasher end; a two-port shutoff valve for the water supply pipe under the kitchen sink (if you haven't already had one installed); and either brackets (for a stone countertop) or screws (for other counter materials) to use in mounting the unit.
  • Labor -- Labor cost will normally include connecting your new dishwasher to the kitchen plumbing and your home's electrical system, as well as physically attaching the appliance to the counter by means of screws or brackets. Any necessary electrical upgrades, plumbing connections, or modifications to your cabinetry are likely to add to the expense. There may be an extra charge for removal and disposal of a worn-out dishwasher, as well.

Get the Most for Your Money

If you've been hesitant to install a dishwasher due to concerns for the environment, think again. The latest model dishwashers are designed to be much more water- and soap-conserving than doing the dishes by hand. Look for Energy Star certification, indicating the most efficient units. There are even small-scale "drawer dishwashers" for singles or couples who don't have a lot of plates, pots, and cutlery to wash on a regular basis.
